Membership in the International Institute for African Scholars is by invitation and application. We welcome scholars, practitioners, and elders whose work advances the Africanization mission — and whose presence enriches the federation.

Four Categories

Choose the category that matches your standing

02

Fellow

$220 doctorate and above

For scholars holding doctoral or terminal credentials. Fellows participate fully in governance, sit on the editorial board, lead roundtables, and are entitled to use the post-nominal "FIIAS".

Member

$175 master's degree and above

For scholars and professionals holding a master's degree or above. Members participate fully in convenings and the publication program, with a clear pathway to Fellow status.

Associate

$150 bachelor's degree and above

For graduates with a bachelor's degree. Associates receive structured mentorship, access to the doctoral support pipeline, and observer status at roundtables.

05

Affiliate

$100 worker, no degree required

For working professionals without a degree who wish to align with the institute's mission. Affiliates participate in selected programs and are part of the IIAS network.

Student Member

FREE below bachelor's level

For students currently enrolled in undergraduate or pre-bachelor's programs. No fee. Student members are encouraged to attend convenings and apply for fellowships as they advance.

Annual Renewal $120

IIAS is a federal tax-exempt non-profit organization (EIN: 85-1471026). Registration fees support the online presence — nobody receives any salary.

The Process

Four steps from inquiry to induction

  1. I

    Submit application

    Complete the form below with your CV, a statement of purpose, and the names of two referees who can speak to your scholarship.

  2. II

    Council review

    The Orientation Council reviews each application against the institute's criteria of scholarly distinction and alignment with the Africanization mission.

  3. III

    Conversation

    Shortlisted applicants are invited to a conversation with two members of the council — a discussion of work, intent, and how IIAS might serve and be served.

  4. IV

    Induction

    Successful candidates are formally inducted at the next General Assembly, where they take the institute's charter and meet the wider federation.
